KMART ASSUMES TITLE SPONSORSHIP OF CHAMPIONSHIP RADIO NETWORK
 DEBUT SET FOR MILWAUKEE
MILWAUKEE, June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Championship Radio Network today announced that Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM) has purchased title sponsorship rights to all of its live broadcasts of the 10 remaining 1992 PPG IndyCar World Series events beginning with this weekend's inaugural coverage of the Miller Genuine Draft 200 in Milwaukee.
"We are both pleased and proud to announce major sponsorship of the network by such a prestigious company," said Paul Page, president of the Championship Network producer Paul Page Productions, Inc. "Kmart's commitment carries with it both funding and credibility for a programming approach I believe will evolve into one of the sports broadcasting successes of the decade.
"The response to our plan has been tremendous. Beginning with a network of some 25 stations serving most IndyCar markets this weekend, we expect the Kmart Championship Radio Network to grow to more than 150 stations by this time next year," added Page.
Kmart Corporation also noted its enthusiasm for the project. "It isn't often a company gets the opportunity for title sponsorship on an exciting new national medium," said David L. Schuvie, vice president of sales and promotions for Kmart. "By committing early to this concept, we believe Kmart will reap significant benefits in terms of both name exposure and image enhancement. Better yet, our agreement enables a number of our vendor partners to participate. Included in this group are Royal Appliance's Dirt Devil brand and Robert Bosch Corporation, both of whom will be presenting sponsors on the inaugural broadcast."
The announcer team for the Kmart Championship Radio Network is one of the most experienced in all of sports. Personalities include Indianapolis 500 broadcast veterans Lou Palmer, Larry Henry, NBC Sports and Indianapolis 500 veterans Sally Larvick, Paul Brian, and Tom Michaels. "Our intent is to provide more than mere play-by-play," added Page. "We intend to entertain and inform with the goal of making every listener an IndyCar Insider."
All programs on the Kmart Championship Radio Network are scheduled for 2 1/2 hours with the exception of the Michigan 500, which will be covered flag-to-flag whatever its duration. In addition, the network will offer an 800 number service for fans desiring IndyCar insider information on a daily basis or live race updates in areas geographically removed from radio station coverage. This 24-hour information service will cost callers only 21 to 50 cents per minute, far less than traditional 900 call-in services.
The information hotline can be reached by calling 800-225-7803 and establishing an account. VISA and MasterCard payment is also accepted.
This weekend's Miller 200 broadcast will be available on several Milwaukee-area radio stations as well as over the track's public address system. Other markets carrying the inaugural Kmart Championship Radio Network coverage include New York, Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Portland, Ore., and Albuquerque, N.M.
Kmart Corporation has been a sponsor of the Newman/Haas IndyCar Racing team since 1988. Kmart is also the parent company for Payless Drug Stores, Builders Square, Waldenbooks, PACE Membership Warehouse, OfficeMax and The Sports Authority. Combined with its 2,397 Kmart stores, the retail giant serves the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada with more than 4,000 retail outlets in all.
