KMART ASSOCIATES PREPARE TO HELP THOSE IN NEED FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON

TROY, Mich., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Kmart associates will lend a helping hand this holiday season by donating 48,000 food baskets to those in need this Thanksgiving.
Kmart associates are busily preparing the nearly 48,000 food baskets to bring a complete Thanksgiving dinner to families across the nation. The baskets will be distributed on Monday, Nov. 22, in each local community by Good News Committee members who work with civic organizations to identify recipients. This is the ninth year for Kmart's national food basket program, unmatched by any company on such a large scale. Kmart Good News Committees are organized by associate volunteers in each store.
"Thanksgiving is a family time and the Kmart family is always eager to share with parents and children in need," said Joseph E. Antonini, Kmart's chairman, president and chief executive officer. "Making certain that there is a Thanksgiving turkey on the table is just one of the many ways Kmart associates reach out to the communities we serve," Antonini added.
Kmart estimates that its associates will fill the 48,000 baskets with approximately 720,000 pounds of turkey, 384,000 slices of pumpkin pie, 240,000 cans of vegetables and loads of bread stuffing, potatoes and cranberries. In the last five years alone, needy families have received 1,500 tons of turkey.
In addition to the food baskets, Kmart associates organized a canned food drive during the company's annual associate family shopping night on Nov. 7, in support of the American Express(R) Charge Against Hunger program. The associate shopping night is an annual tradition which allows Kmart employees the opportunity to shop after hours before the busy holiday shopping season begins. All canned food collected was donated to local hunger relief organizations.
Kmart's hunger relief efforts will continue throughout the holiday season as the company supports the American Express Charge Against Hunger program. For every Kmart purchase made with the American Express Card from Nov. 26 through New Year's Eve, Kmart will donate two cents (up to $250,000) to Share Our Strength, one of the nation's largest nonprofit hunger relief organizations.
