KMART ANNOUNCES ITS HUNGER RELIEF EFFORTS FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON

TROY, Mich., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Kmart employees will join together this holiday season in one of the largest single canned-food drives ever, the company announced today. "One Million Cans from One Million Hands" will be collected during Kmart's annual "Employee Shopping Night" on Nov. 7. Food collected will be distributed among local agencies in each community and will help support the American Express Charge Against Hunger program.
Kmart shoppers will have the chance to help those in need this holiday season, too. From Nov. 26 through Dec. 31, Kmart will join American Express in its "Charge Against Hunger" program to raise up to $5 million to provide food for people who are hungry during the holiday season. American Express made a $1 million "down payment" donation on Oct. 5 to Share Our Strength and will contribute 2 cents for every American Express Card purchase through the end of the year. Kmart will match American Express' 2 cents donation to Share Our Strength for every American Express Card purchase at Kmart stores nationwide up to $250,000. Share Our Strength is one of the nation's largest non-profit hunger-relief organizations.
Kmart Good News Committees, made up of associate volunteers at every Kmart store nationwide, will continue their tradition of community involvement by donating Thanksgiving food baskets to 20 local families identified by local civic organizations. Since 1985, more than 400,000 families have received a complete Thanksgiving dinner from Kmart.
"Kmart's Thanksgiving food baskets and the 'Charge Against Hunger' program offer employees and customers the opportunity to join together to aid in hunger relief this holiday season," said Joseph Antonini, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Kmart.
