KLM AND NORTHWEST AIRLINES INAUGURATE JOINT SERVICE BETWEEN AMSTERDAM AND DETROIT

KLM AND NORTHWEST AIRLINES INAUGURATE JOINT SERVICE
 BETWEEN AMSTERDAM AND DETROIT
DETROIT, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (NYSE: KLM) and Northwest Airlines today began joint non-stop service between Detroit and Amsterdam, as part of a continuing marketing relationship.
The service is the second major marketing agreement between the two airlines. In April 1991, KLM and Northwest began non-stop service between Amsterdam, KLM's hub, and Minneapolis/St. Paul, Northwest's second-largest traffic center.
The inaugural flight, a KLM Boeing 747 carrying KLM President Pieter Bouw, other dignitaries and nearly 400 passengers, was met at Detroit Metropolitan Airport by Michigan Gov. John Engler, Wayne County Executive Ed McNamara and Northwest Airlines President and Chief Executive Officer John Dasburg.
The Detroit-Amsterdam flight will be operated round-trip three times a week by KLM. Northwest will independently market and sell a portion of the seats on each flight. Beginning in June 1992, flights will operate daily.
"This new connection is special in more ways than one," said Bouw. "Detroit is namely our 10th gateway in the United States -- a new milestone in the history of KLM service between the U.S. and the Netherlands."
"This new service will provide Northwest and KLM passengers with quick and convenient connections between both airlines' entire route systems," said Dasburg. "The growing marketing relationship between our airlines will greatly benefit passengers traveling to all corners of the world."
The new service will be listed in flight reservations systems under double flight numbers. KLM 616/NW 1616 will depart Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 9 p.m. and arrive at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport at 10:20 the next morning. KLM 615/NW 1615 will depart Amsterdam on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 1:55 p.m. and arrive in Detroit at 4:30 p.m.
From Detroit, Northwest and Northwest Airlink operate 350 daily departures to 70 destinations in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. Northwest is America's fourth-largest airline.
From Amsterdam, KLM flies to more than 150 cities in 77 countries on six continents.
