TIGER WOODS stormed back to the top of the golfing world last night - much to the delight of his new girlfriend.

The American overtook Rory McIlory with his victory at Bay Hill - his third on the US PGA Tour this season and his sixth in his last 20 starts.

STATS Moments after his two-shot win in the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Woods' girlfriend Lindsey Vonn (inset) tweeted: "Number 1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!" Ian Poulter added: "Lets chase the Tiger again." Woods returns to the top of the rankings for the 11th time during his eventful career and the first time since October 2010.

The 37-year-old will look to end a longer absence by winning his first Major since 2008 at the Masters next month.

"It's been a few years since I felt this good going to Augusta," he said.

This was another significant milestone on the road to redemption for the winner of 14 Majors. McIlroy's final event before the Masters will be the Shell Houston Open, starting on Thursday and then he plans to spend two days in Haiti on a goodwill mission.

American TV pundit Johnny Miller said: "Maybe that will actually help Rory McIlroy by taking the heat off him being No.1 and set him free again".
