KIMCO HOTEL & RESTAURANT MANAGEMENT CO. ASSUMES MANAGEMENT OF LANDMARK SIR FRANCIS DRAKE HOTEL

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The historic Sir Francis Drake Hotel, located on Union Square, received new ownership on Dec. 2 and will be operated by Kimco Hotel & Restaurant Management Co. which currently manages 17 hotels and 16 restaurants on the West Coast. The new owners are the Sir Francis Drake Hotel Associates, a limited partnership. Prior to acquisition by the new owner, the hotel was closed pursuant to procedures resulting from the bankruptcy and foreclosure process.
The rejuvenated hotel will capture the traditioin while upgrading the decor and ambiance. Kimco has made a specialty of reviving run-down vintage hotels like the Sir Francis Drake. "This activity has added greatly to the fabric of The City, and has created thousands of jobs," explained Bill Kimpton, chairman of Kimco.
The 65-year-old landmark is closed for renovation; the hotel, cafe, restaurant and Starlight Roof will reopen late spring. The company expects to staff the hotel with experienced personnel from its other properties to afford its employees the opportunity for advancement and to maintain the character and feel of a small hotel.
While the essential character and Gothic-Renaissance architectural details of the 1928 building will be preserved, guestrooms will be updated, and new concepts are in development stages for Crusty's restaurant, located on Powell St., and the Starlight Roof, located on the hotel's 21st floor. In addition, a 55-seat cafe will be added on the corner of Sutter and Powell, and a lobby bar will be added to the mezzanine. The restaurants will reflect the style and quality of other Kimco-operated restaurants which include Postrio, Masa's and Kuleto's Italian Restaurant located here.
"The place is tired, but we'll add new elements, like the restaruant and cafe, to make it a vibrant and inviting place," said Kimpton.
One tradition that is not expected to change is the hotel's famous doorman in colorful "Beefeater" attire greeting guests.
Kimco has become known for its successful operation of smaller hotels and Kimpton believes the company is more than equal to the challenge of giving the 417-room Sir Francis Drake the same personality, charm and highly personalized service for which his other hotels have gained their reputation.
"Our formula has been no formula -- we have evolved as a company by taking advantage of opportunities as they present themselves and look for these type of vintage properties," said Kimpton. "We'll provide guests with a truly unique experience at the Drake -- a small hotel experience, in a stylish, comfortable setting, and value for the customer. That's what the traveler has come to expect from us, and we'll continue to deliver."
Kimco's San Francisco hotels and restaurants include Hotel Bedford; Hotel Vintage Court/Masa's; The Prescott Hotel/Postrio; The Villa Florence/Kuleto's Italian Restaurant; Galleria Park Hotel/Bentley's Seafood Grill & Oyster Bar; The Tuscan Inn/Cafe Pescatore; Monticello Inn/Corona Bar & Grill; Harbor Court Hotel/Harry Denton's; The Cartwright Hotel; The Carlton Hotel; Hotel Triton; Splendido restaurant and the newly opened Kuleto's Trattoria in Burlingame.
