KIMBLE GLASS EXPANDING BURKE COUNTY MANUFACTURING PLANT

KIMBLE GLASS EXPANDING BURKE COUNTY MANUFACTURING PLANT
RALEIGH, N.C., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Kimble Glass, Inc. will

expand its manufacturing facility in Morganton, announced Governor Jim Martin today. Kimble Glass is investing an additional $6.5 million and creating 70-80 new jobs at its Wamsutta Mill Road operation which produces glass vials for science and research laboratories and the pharmaceutical industry.
"This is good news for Burke County and North Carolina," said Governor Martin. "We applaud Kimble Glass' decision to expand here and we appreciate the company's continued vote of confidence in our people, our communities and our state's better business climate."
Secretary Estell C. Lee of the North Carolina Department of Economic and Community Development said, "We thank Kimble Glass for this manufacturing expansion which will benefit our economy. In turn, we're committed to help make this operation the very best it can be."
Construction of the 64,800 square-foot addition will begin immediately on its 5 acre site with completion expected in August and production to begin in September 1992. Kimble Glass began production in January 1991 with an initial capital investment of $4.5 million and 62 employees at its new 42,100 square-foot facility in Morganton.
"This is an extremely important venture for Kimble Glass, Inc.," said Dr. R.H. Redwine, Vice President Kimble Glass, Inc. and Director of Manufacturing. "Quality is essential and we have been very gratified by the quality produced in the Morganton plant.
"Our business continues to increase in competitiveness and we must continuously improve our quality, service, productivity and manufacturing costs in existing and in future operations under consideration," continued Redwine. "We are most pleased to expand our Morganton operations at this time."
New employees will be trained by the state's free skills training program administered by Western Piedmont Community College. This program was one of the primary reasons cited by Kimble Glass when initially choosing North Carolina.
"We were happy two years ago when this outstanding company picked Morganton as the very best place to do business," said Mayor Mel Cohen. "Kimble Glass has diversified our economic base and it's growth will continue to create many more opportunities for our community's positive growth."
Wayne Harris, Chairman, Burke Economic Development Council, said, "We're extremely happy Kimble Glass is expanding in this area. We knew it was a possibility and we're proud of the successful partnership we've formed that's made this a reality."
Ronnie Thompson, Chairman, Burke County Commissioners, said, "Kimble's expansion speaks very highly of the outstanding performance of their employees, our citizens, and the cooperative efforts of state and local groups."
This is the only N.C. facility of Kimble Glass, Inc. a unit of Owens-Illinois, Inc. in Toledo, Ohio. Owens-Illinois has operations in Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Hamlet.
Economic Developer Robert Dunn of NCDECD's Northwestern Regional Office, Executive Director Tom Johnson of the Burke County Economic Development Commission, and state and local officials have worked with Kimble Glass on siting and expanding the facility.
