DALLAS, Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- In a move that will create a new premium segment in the $4 billion U.S. disposable diaper market, Kimberly-Clark Corporation (NYSE: KMB) today announced a new addition to the Huggies product line -- Huggies Supreme diapers. With a white, cloth-like outer cover and attachment tabs by VELCRO USA, Inc., this product is significantly preferred by consumers over other diapers now available.
"Today more than ever, consumers are looking for performance and value in their purchases," said Wayne R. Sanders, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Kimberly-Clark Corporation. "One way of delivering superior value is by using innovative technology to improve performance and offering that improvement at a reasonable price. With Huggies Supreme diapers, Kimberly-Clark has done just that, and we believe parents and their babies will be delighted with the result."
The cloth-like product is an outgrowth of Kimberly-Clark's pioneering development of versatile non-woven fabrics, Mr. Sanders said. In consumer tests, parents responded enthusiastically to the soft feel of the non-woven outer cover of Huggies Supreme diapers, he said. They also liked its exclusive attachment tabs by VELCRO USA, which resist powders and lotions and make it easy to adjust fit and check for wetness without damaging the diaper.
"The same strong commitment to product innovation that has made Huggies diapers the number one selling brand in the U.S. led Kimberly- Clark to develop Huggies Supreme diapers," Mr. Sanders said. "Underneath this product's cloth-like exterior is sophisticated technology that provides outstanding absorbency and leakage protection. Huggies Supreme diapers offer the best of both worlds -- premium performance and a soft, elegant feel."
Kimberly-Clark was the first company to develop an ultra thin diaper, which it launched in 1992 under the brand name, Huggies UltraTrim. Like Huggies UltraTrim diapers, Huggies Supreme diapers are made with advanced superabsorbent materials and feature an innovative liner that quickly draws and distributes fluid throughout the diaper.
Huggies Supreme diapers will be offered in five sizes and, on a per diaper basis, will be priced modestly higher than other Huggies diapers. The product will be available in portions of the western United States in early 1994, and distribution will be expanded nationally as soon as production schedules allow.
Separately, the company said it will begin shipping Huggies Ultrathin diapers in Europe in January. The product, which will be manufactured at the company's new plant at Barton-upon-Humber, England, will be available initially in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
Kimberly-Clark is a manufacturer of household, personal care and health care products, as well as newsprint and premium business, correspondence and specialty papers. In addition to Huggies diapers, the company's well-known consumer products include Huggies Pull-Ups training pants, Huggies baby wipes, Kleenex facial tissue, Kleenex premium bathroom tissue, Kotex and New Freedom feminine care products, Hi-Dri household towels and Depend and Poise incontinence products.
