KIM AND KANYE JUST IN IT FOR GAIN?
EVEN though marriage is no longer very fashionable, one still likes to cling to the faint hope that old traditions die hard. If two people do decide to make that commitment you like to think they're at least doing it for love, not for personal gain.
Sadly that argument gets blown out of the water when it comes to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. News that the reality star and the rapper are getting married in Paris in May is as tedious as it's laughable because while most people would be organising dresses, flowers and seating plans, they are reported to be putting the final stages to their prenuptial agreement, and Kim will allegedly be getting $1m for every year she stays married to Kanye.
Why on earth is she getting paid? If it's such a challenge that recompense is needed for it, don't bother.
I hope this won't send a message to women that "getting married is the easiest financial gig on earth". With Kim Kardashian bizarrely a role model for aspiring and avaricious young women, I worry for the men out there who might also get stung.
It's little wonder some married men end up looking for mistresses who ask nothing of them, when married to wives who take them for everything.
But although Kim will get a chunky $1m for every year she is married to Kanye, the pre-nup apparently has that capped at $10m. Well at least we know they'll make it to their 10-year wedding anniversary then.
The pre-nup is also reported to state that their Bel Air mansion will be in Kim's name, even though Kanye is footing a majority of the bill, and she will keep all jewellery and gifts from him. On top of that, any money she earns from her reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashians, the Kardashian clothing line, and her promotional appearances, will all be considered her separate and sole income. Not bad for a woman whose notoriety came about purely because of a sex tape leaked some years ago.
Then there are Kanye's life insurance policies, and apparently one of them, valued at $20m, will name Kim as the beneficiary for life, even in the event of a divorce, and there are no clauses in the agreement concerning custody arrangements of their daughter North.
According to reports, Kanye is worth $100m, and Kim is worth $40m. Since the rapper has recently been modelling himself on Jesus, naming his tour and his album Yeezus, and performing in long heavy robes, let's hope he's mastered the ability to turn water into wine. Any cost efficiency habits will be useful for his future. Their official media line is: "The couple is focused on the wedding and looking forward to spending the rest of their lives together. Kim is head over heels in love with Kanye, and knows this is for ever." I hope so for Kanye's sake, as he wrote a rap song years ago called Gold Digger, and if he's not careful the lyrics could come back to haunt him.
An insider said: "Despite having been married twice before, Kim is treating this wedding as her one and only." Which just shows we can tell ourselves anything if we want to. Talk about cart and horse. She's had the sex tape, she's already had the child, and now she's onto the third wedding. No doubt she will choose to wear virginal white down the aisle, probably complimentary from a top fashion house.
Not to mention all the freebies that will be undoubtedly thrown at her: clothes, shoes, cars, you name it. In fact, with the exposure any product will get, the whole wedding could hardly cost a dime, and the gift bags will be outstanding.
But back to that paperwork, and sources say the "entire process for the couple's prenup has been extremely easy". In fact it's said that Kanye didn't even think they needed a pre-nup, he was ready to give Kim "carte blanche to all of his financial assets". Oh bless. Young love, eh.
Conversely, the preparation of the pre-nup for Kim's previous wedding to American basketball player Kris Humphries apparently went on for several months. Way longer than their actual marriage, which infamously lasted just 72 days.
What makes this all so ridiculous is that marriage should be about love and friendship.
Even someone as cynical as me knows that. Marital longevity is based upon a good foundation, respect and companionship, not financials and pre-nups. When it becomes materialistic it's no longer a marital union, it's a business agreement. Hence they'll have no right to complain if they don't have love in their socalled marriage down the line.
