KILTED GAFFER PLAID IT SAFE; Pants rule passed.

Byline: LORI CAMPBELL

A GANG of kilted workmen are being forced to wear pants - to stop them suing for sexual harassment.

The boss of American-based Karpenters in Kilts says he has already caught female customers peering up the men's plaid pleats to see what's underneath.

And now proud Scot Marc Ross is terrified one of his workers will sue, and land a hefty chunk of his $4million turnover.

Marc, whose father emigrated to the US as a child, has now told workers they must wear cycling shorts under their kilts.

The 34-year-old knew something had to be done when he found a customer checking out a burly worker on a ladder.

He said: "My heart was thumping through fear - that constitutes sexual harassment in the US.

"It is becoming such a lawsuit-mad society, I thought it was better to be safe than sorry.

"There have also been times when women have grabbed my men while they had nothing on underneath to find out what was there."

Marc, whose family comes from Ross-shire, tore up all his trousers 10 years ago in favour of wearing kilts around his home town of Denver.

And he insists the pounds 400 tartan garments imported from Edinburgh help improve the productivity of his whole workforce.

Marc says he is grateful to films like Braveheart for educating American society that he was not walking around in a skirt.

But one curious observer said: "They are basically men wearing dresses.

"There are a lot of women who walk their dogs close to where they are working to take a look."
