KID TRAVELERS SERVED BY KID CONCIERGES,
 A FEATURE OF OMNI SHOREHAM HOTEL'S I'M A.O.K. PROGRAM
WASHINGTON, July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- What can kids do in a hotel? Plenty, feels Norman MacLeod, vice president and managing director of Washington's Omni Shoreham Hotel, where the inaugural balls of U.S. presidents are held and where Gorbachev stayed when he recently visited the nation's capital.
As the father of a 5-year-old, MacLeod has an understanding of the needs of children who stay in hotels. He put his ideas into a newly launched program called I'm A.O.K., meaning I'm An Omni Kid. The program treats kids as special guests.
Here's how it works. Upon arrival with parents or family, kids are given an I'm A.O.K. Identification card, an ID button to wear and a VIP bag containing souvenirs and a newsletter telling about what's fun at the hotel and around town.
Kids get to see what makes the hotel tick. They watch chefs prepare food, see how reservations are handled, see the hotel switchboard in action, and how bellmen deal with luggage. There's a children's theater every Saturday, and also swimming, tennis, basketball, shuffleboard and other organized activities. Additionally, by presenting their ID cards at 20 shops and restaurants within the hotel, in the neighborhood and at the National Zoo, they receive discounts on what they buy for themselves and their families.
Kid Concierges answer questions on what to do and where to go. These sixth graders, tops in their classes from the nearby Oyster and Maret Schools, were chosen after intensive interviews. They are well versed on Washington and trained by the hotel's concierge, David Cooper.
I'm A.O.K. kids voice their likes and potential improvements about the hotel through comment cards.
MacLeod is learning lots from what the kids have to say. He realizes that today's kids will be booking their own hotel rooms in a few years.
