KEY TRONIC TO COMPLETE ITS RESTRUCTURING PROGRAM

SPOKANE, Wash., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Key Tronic Corp. (NASDAQ: KTCC), a Spokane-based producer of computer keyboards and other input devices, announced today it is completing a major restructuring of its production and administrative operations. Redeployment of selected manufacturing functions among Key Tronic's worldwide locations is part of a plan that included the acquisition of the Honeywell Keyboard Division last July. The current phase of Key Tronic's restructuring is scheduled to be completed by July 1994.
Production at the Cheney facility will be moved in phases to the company's plant in Spokane Industrial Park, to its nearby headquarters, and to its plant in Juarez, Mexico. New-generation products will be manufactured at Spokane headquarters, and remain there or be deployed to Key Tronic locations in the United States and worldwide which best satisfy the logistical, cost and marketing needs of computer OEM customers. The company has additional facilities in Ireland and a manufacturing relationship in Malaysia.
Key Tronic's corporate executive offices, engineering and new product development operations will remain in Spokane.
In his announcement, Chief Executive Officer Stanley Hiller said, "This phase of Key Tronic's restructuring will deliver the full advantage of our acquisition of Honeywell's keyboard operations. Prompt action had to be taken because Key Tronic will continue to sustain losses until the efficiencies of our realignment are realized, and major production programs that were recently won begin to come on stream during the second quarter of calendar 1994.
"Key Tronic is not downsizing," Hiller said, "on the contrary, as we attract additional business for new products, we expect growth in all locations of the company. However, we found unavoidable the relocations and layoffs from the Cheney plant that resulted from the consolidation. The company's future is at stake as we respond to the pricing pressures of a computer industry in transition. Like many American companies, we are in a catch-up race to bring back lost business and jobs from overseas competitors. To survive over the long-term, we must now do whatever is required to become a consistent leader in this industry."
Key Tronic is the world's largest supplier of computer keyboards, with operations in Spokane; Dundalk, Ireland; Las Cruces, N.M.; Juarez, Mexico; and its manufacturing relationship in Malaysia.
