KEVIN BYRNE ELECTED TREASURER OF THE EQUITABLE

 NEW YORK, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Kevin R. Byrne was elected treasurer of The Equitable Companies Incorporated (NYSE: EQ) and its wholly owned subsidiary, The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the U.S., it was announced today by Richard H. Jenrette, chairman and chief executive officer of The Equitable Companies. Mr. Byrne, 37-years-old, was previously deputy treasurer.
 Mr. Byrne has overall responsibility for the treasury functions of The Equitable, which includes short-term investments and funding, liquidity management, banking services and risk management services.
 He joined The Equitable in 1989 as vice president in charge of the finance and funding group within the Treasurer's Department. Prior to joining The Equitable, he was assistant treasurer at Castle & Cooke, Inc., a Los Angeles-based holding company with business concentrations in agriculture, leasing and real estate development. From 1983 until 1987, he held various positions within the Treasury Department at Sperry Corporation.
 Mr. Byrne is a graduate of Fordham University with a BS degree in finance and has an MBA in international business from New York University.
 Mr. Byrne also serves as treasurer of Equitable Variable Life Insurance Company, Equitable of Colorado, Equitable of Vermont and Frontier Trust Company.
