KERR-MCGEE MINE RECLAIMS 2,000th ACRE OF MINED LAND

OKLAHOMA CITY, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Kerr-McGee Coal Corp.'s Jacobs Ranch Mine in Wyoming has marked a major environmental milestone. During the last week of November, permanent reclamation was completed on the mine's 2,000th acre of mined land.
Environmental supervisor Darryl Maunder said, "The fall reclamation program included planting shrubs and grasses on 107 acres of reclaimed area. This brings the permanently reclaimed area to 2,073 acres, (about three square miles) more than any other mine in the Powder River Basin."
Jacobs Ranch Mine has shipped more than 175 million tons of coal since it opened in 1977. In the process, 3,600 acres have been affected by mining and construction of facilities such as roads, maintenance shops and offices.
"Our active pits and facilities require about 1,500 acres. Once these were established, the area affected each year by mining has been balanced by an equal number of reclaimed acres. Returning mined land to productive grazing and wildlife habitat as quickly as possible is a prime objective of our environmental program. Our program involves immediate temporary reclamation of disturbed areas, followed as soon as possible by permanent reclamation. Shrubs grow slowly and reclamation takes time. The sooner we can start, the better," Maunder noted.
The Jacobs Ranch Mine reclamation program has been recognized by state and federal regulatory agencies. In 1989, the Office of Surface Mining of the Department of the Interior presented the mine a national award for outstanding reclamation. The State of Wyoming awarded the mine first place in its environmental competition in 1989 and honorable mention for the two years since.
Dick Turpin, manager of engineering, commented on the milestone, "By any measure, the reclamation program at Jacobs Ranch Mine has been an outstanding success. Groundwater has returned quickly to the mined lands. The abundant wildlife, including elk, that have returned to the reclaimed areas shows that the land is productive and able to support both a ranching operation and a diverse wildlife population."
"We want to continue to be an environmental leader," said Clem Burdick, director of Environmental and Regulatory Affairs for Kerr-McGee Coal. "Jacobs Ranch was the first mine in Wyoming's Powder River Basin to receive partial bond release for reclaimed land under the 1976 Surface Mine Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) regulations. We are awaiting final word from Wyoming's Department of Environmental Quality on a 100 percent bond release application, which will mark another first.
"When the mine opened, Kerr-McGee committed to demonstrate that responsible coal mining was compatible with the environment. All of the Jacobs Ranch Mine employees are proud of their contributions to meeting this commitment and of their excellent record of environmental stewardship," Burdick said.
