 KEPTEL REPORTS EARNINGS
TINTON FALLS, N.J., July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Keptel (NASDAQ: KPTL)

announced today the completion of the reorganization begun by the company last fall. On sales of $9,059,000, the company reported operating income of $881,000 or nearly 10 percent of sales compared with just 8 percent of sales on revenues of $12,750,000 for the comparable period last year. Gross profit margins for the period increased to 28.4 percent from 27.4 percent a year ago while operating expenses for the quarter decreased from approximately $2,200,000 last year to $1,700,000 this year. Revenues during the quarter were lower than the comparable period last year as a result of discontinuing certain marginal products, a temporary slow down in bookings from NYNEX and the sale of the Armiger product line which last year added approximately $5 million to total revenues.
While the price of the Armiger assets sold April 2 approximated the net book value, severance expenses associated with the decision to discontinue as a subcontractor and distributor for the purchaser caused the company to incur a pretax charge of $447,000 which resulted in net income of $86,000 or .02 per common share.
Richard K. Laird, president and chief executive officer said:
"Completing the sale of the Armiger assets and the downsizing which followed, concludes the many steps begun last fall to sharpen market focus and dramatically increase earnings. The company's SG&A and R&D effort is now properly sized to focus on our principal market ... Bell Telephone Companies, and our Maquiladora operation is not only running smoothly but has become an important competitive advantage. Though revenues compared with a year ago will be lower, strong earnings growth is now in sight."
"In addition", said Laird, "new products either now being trialed by the customer or coming from the lab should increase our solid base business and continue to distinguish the company as an innovative telecom supplier."
