KENWOOD REINFORCES COMPANY COMMITMENT TO HOME THEATER WITH INTRODUCTION OF LUCASFILM HOME THX(R)-CERTIFIED COMPONENTS AT SHOW

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Kenwood U.S.A. Corp. will begin shipments to retailers this spring of two home theater components certified by LucasFilm Home THX(R) Program. The two pieces, an audio-video controller/tuner and a power amplified, are intended to retail for close to $2,000, making them the most affordable Home THX- certified electronics package available.
LucasArts Entertainment Co., the licenser of the THX Home System technology, is the acknowledged industry leader in the presentation of motion picture sound as originally created by the filmmaker. The company maintains rigid standards for both its Theatre THX Sound System Program and the Home THX Audio System Program under which the new Kenwood components are licensed. According to Joe Richter, Kenwood vice-president, sales and marketing for the Home Electronics Group, this effort will greatly broaden the market for high-quality, theater-like home entertainment. The Kenwood electronics components can be combined with a variety of Home THX-certified speaker systems to provide consumers with the same entertainment experience found in motion picture theatres with the THX Sound System.
Speaker systems, combining the needed front, surround, and subwoofer units are available from $3,000 to more than $10,000 from a number of manufacturers. Home THX-certified speakers must be used with the components to realize the intended Home THX AudioSystem results.
Richter said the Kenwood THX components introduction "will allow consumers to virtually cut in half their prior financial investment in a full Home THX system." He said the company will be demonstrating their new components in conjunction with new THX- certified speakers from Altec-Lansing in their Las Vegas Convention Center Display (D-64).
The Kenwood KC-X1 audio-video controller/tuner is a feature-laden unit with five audio input, four video input, and five video output terminals as well as three S-Video terminals. The KC-X1, in addition to Home THX Cinema, has Dolby(R) Pro Logic, Dolby 3 Stereo, and DSP Logic modes.
The new KM-X1 six-channel power amplifier registers at 100 watts per channel and will provide system handling capability for any potential use.
Kenwood's Richter said the new components have been in development for nearly two years and their spring retail introduction will be closely monitored to assure that dealers are demonstrating them in the proper environment.
