KENWOOD 'ON THE BUBBLE' AWARD GOES TO THE SLOWEST OF THE FAST
LONG BEACH, Calif., May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- A race car driver could be in worse company. Roger Mears, Gordon Johncock and Gary Bettenhausen have all etched their names in an award recognizing the "slowest of the fast." It's the Kenwood ON THE BUBBLE Award, and each Memorial Day week it goes to the final, slowest qualifier for the Indianapolis 500.
Being the slowest in a 33-man field of what is quite possibly the speediest group assembled in one place at one time is not a consolation prize. Rather, it (and the $10,000 that goes with the honor) is a recognition that most drivers savor, for it signifies acceptance to race day's starting grid.
The ON THE BUBBLE Award has been a Gasoline Alley tradition, since 1980.
As the arduous qualifying runs lead up to the Memorial Day event, there's always a single slowest qualifier -- even if only for a day. That driver is known to be "on the bubble." He is figuratively, if not literally, waiting for it to burst. And all the non-qualifiers are trying hard to assure that it does.
The sponsorship of this award by Kenwood U.S.A. Corp. fits with the consumer electronics company's ongoing motorsports involvement. Kenwood has been a major SCCA sponsor for several years and has supported individual cars on a number of racing circuits. And, later this year, Kenwood will sponsor a Bonneville Salt Flats effort to set a new world record in an electric-powered vehicle.
Besides sponsoring the ON THE BUBBLE Award, Kenwood will participate in this year's Indy 500 Expo with an appearance of the Tour de Force -- a $1 million mobile informational display featuring the latest in audio and video technology.
The Tour de Force, which when fully operational covers more than 5,000 square feet, will be open to the public during Expo hours. Race fans will step into a surround-sound theater, view a specially made laserdisc presentation and interact with computer modules that allow individuals to access information on current technologies.
Based in Long Beach, Kenwood recently celebrated its 30th anniversary in the United States. The company markets home and car audio, video, communications and test and measurement equipment through authorized dealers nationwide.
