KENTUCKY-MADE TOYOTA CAMRY NAMED BEST FAMILY SEDAN IN AMERICA

GEORGETOWN, Ky., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Toyota Camry DX assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, U.S.A., Inc. (TMM) here placed first in a comparison test of top family sedans conducted by "Car and Driver." The results are published in the magazine's July 1993 issue.
The "Car and Driver" findings are the latest in a series of honors for TMM. Most recently, the J.D. Power and Associates marketing research firm announced on May 27 that TMM is the best automobile plant in North America. TMM earned the prestigious Gold Plant Quality Award based on the Camry's strong performance in Power's Initial Quality Study of new car buyers.
"The customers ruled in the J.D. Power survey. It is also gratifying that `Car and Driver's' experts verify that our 4,700 American team members are succeeding in meeting the customers' demands for high quality," said Mike DaPrile, general manager for manufacturing at TMM. "We are in the business of making constant improvements by listening to the customer."
In conducting its test, "Car and Driver" considered four-door, five- passenger sedans that fall within the price range of $17,500 to $18,500 (the average new car in America sells for close to $18,000 ). The cars tested all had automatic transmissions, air-conditioning, driver airbags and anti-lock brakes.
The "Car and Driver" report reads: "These stipulations provide a telling indication of which makers have kept up with the most demanding customers and which ones have fallen off the pace."
The rules narrowed the field to six finalists: Dodge Intrepid, Ford Taurus GL, Mazda 626DX, Mitsubishi Galant ES, Nissan Altima GXE and the Toyota Camry DX.
"Car and Driver" described the Camry DX as "luxuriously functional" and cited its smooth ride, handling, comfort, fuel-economy and attention to detail.
"Everywhere we look in the Camry, we see that Toyota looked there as well -- and made inspired decisions," the article reads.
TMM produced 240,000 Camry sedans and station wagons in 1992. It is currently expanding its facilities to allow for an additional 200,000 vehicles per year.
During the past year, the Toyota Camry has been named "Family Circle" magazine's Family Car of the Year; "Automobile Magazine's" Best Built American Car; and one of "Car and Driver's" top 10 cars.
