KENNAMETAL ISSUES STATEMENT

 KENNAMETAL ISSUES STATEMENT
PITTSBURGH, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to charges made

by U.S. Rep. Charles G. Rose (D-N.C.) in a media release distributed on April 27, 1992, Kennametal Inc. (NYSE: KMT) today issued the following statement:
"The charges made by Congressman Rose in his April 27 media release can only be characterized as lies. We believe it is no coincidence that these false charges were made on the eve of further investigations into the House banking scandal and are part of Rose's continuing attempts to divert attention away from his problems.
"Rose's charges are phony and malicious, particularly concerning the termination of the company's relationship with a former employee, Marianne Gasior. Ms. Gasior's motivation was recently questioned in an independently-developed story by The Latrobe Bulletin in its issue of April 17, 1992.
"The story detailed public records concerning an arrest warrant alleging that Ms. Gasior harassed another female Kennametal employee. The charges were filed by the state police, and Kennametal was not involved in the filing of the charges. Moreover, Rose's statement that a Kennametal witness said the charges as filed were false is a total fabrication by Rose.
"Congressman Rose's false allegations are vicious and defamatory, and the company demands a retraction of the allegations of obstruction of justice.
"Kennametal has stated repeatedly that it has nothing to hide and has cooperated fully with government agencies, providing them with worldwide access to company documents and employees.
"We question whether Congressman Rose is more concerned with the truth or with headlines. The tactics of Congressman Rose should be of deep concern not only to Kennametal and its 5,000 employees, but also to all Americans.
"Kennametal has not been charged with any violation of U.S. law. We are confident the present investigation will maintain our reputation as a corporation of high integrity and patriotism.
"For more than a year, Kennametal has sought to clear its name. We believe it is time for the media and others to question the motivation of our critics, particularly the political grandstanding in an election year."
