KENETECH SIGNS POWER CONTRACT FOR MINNESOTA WINDPLANT

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- KENETECH Corp. (NASDAQ: KWND) today announced that its Windpower subsidiary has signed a power contract with Northern States Power Co. (NSP) for a 25-megawatt (MW) Windplant(TM) in Minnesota.
KENETECH President Gerald Alderson said, "The NSP project is the first utility-sized wind energy generating power plant in the Midwest, and the first major Windplant to be built in the United States outside of California." NSP's selection of KENETECH, Alderson added, "further demonstrates the utility industry's growing acceptance of KENETECH Windwpower's advanced wind turbine technology."
The project will utilize 73 of KENETECH's Model 33M-VS variable speed wind turbines. The 33M-VS is a utility-grade wind turbine that can generate pollution-free electricity at a price competitive with newly-constructed fossil-fuel plants.
"This is a solid first step toward significant wind-generated energy in Minnesota," said Larry Taylor, NSP's vice president of customer operations, "and it's the best option available for NSP and its electric customers."
Through its Windpower subsidiary, KENETECH will own, operate, and maintain the Windplant, and will sell the electricity to NSP under the 25-year power purchase agreement. CNF Constructors Inc., also a subsidiary of KENETECH, will serve as the primary contractor and site engineer for the project.
The Windplant will be located on Buffalo Ridge near Lake Benton in Lincoln County, Minn. KENETECH was selected by NSP to develop and operate the Lake Benton wind energy facility through a competitive bidding process. The project is expected to be operational by May 1994.
This 25-MW Windplant is Phase I of NSP's commitment to install 100 MW of wind-generated electricity by 1997. Additional capacity will be awarded through a similar competitive bidding process.
KENETECH Corp. is a leading provider of products and services to the electric power industry. Through its subsidiaries, the company designs, builds, finances, operates, and maintains power plants that utilize environmentally-preferred technologies -- principally wind, biomass, and natural gas. The company also provides energy management services to industrial, institutional and commercial customers.
