KEMPER NATIONAL AND UAP SIGN COOPERATION AGREEMENT

KEMPER NATIONAL AND UAP SIGN COOPERATION AGREEMENT
PARIS, March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Kemper National Insurance

Companies and France's largest insurer, the UAP Group, have signed a cooperation agreement here that will allow UAP to expand its capabilities for insuring European businesses that have locations in North America.
Under the agreement, Kemper will share in this business providing its North American underwriting and servicing expertise to the property and casualty insurance programs of UAP's European multinational clients.
"In this way, Kemper National will have an opportunity to access European multinational business that might not otherwise be available to it," said Gerald L. Maatman, Kemper National chairman and chief executive officer.
Since 1989, Kemper National and UAP have had a joint venture company, UAP/Kemper HPR Company, that has marketed and serviced highly protected risk (HPR) insurance in Europe. HPR coverage is available to commercial, institutional and industrial facilities meeting a high standard of property loss protection.
Kemper National and UAP expect demand for wide-ranging North American service capabilities for foreign multinational clients will expand with the development of the single European market. This agreement with Kemper National will allow UAP to enhance the services it provides its industrial clients by expanding its international network into the United States and Canada.
At a ceremony in Paris, the principal signatories to the cooperation agreement were Jean Peyrelevade, chairman and president of UAP, and Gerald L. Maatman, chairman and chief executive officer of Kemper National.
The UAP Group, with 1991 revenues of FF 104 billion, is France's largest insurer and, on a consolidated basis with its international holdings, the second largest insurer in Europe. Kemper National, based in Long Grove, Ill., is the 16th largest property-casualty insurer in the United States with 1991 sales of $3.2 billion.
Kemper National and UAP Group intend to cooperate in other areas around the world where parallel interests develop.
