KEMPER DETERMINING HOW MANY POLICYHOLDERS AFFECTED BY HURRICANE ANDREW;
 INSURER ADVISES POLICYHOLDERS ON PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
 LONG GROVE, Ill., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Kemper National Insurance Companies, a group of major personal and commercial insurers, is assessing the damage from Hurricane Andrew to determine whether any of its South Florida policyholders were affected.
 A Kemper catastrophe claim team will be in the area in the next 24 hours to begin settling claims.
 Kemper National suggested its policyholders affected by the hurricane take the following steps:
 -- Contact your insurance agent as soon as possible. If you are not able to stay in your home, let the agent know where you can be reached. If you cannot reach your agent, call Kemper's customer relations department at 800-833-0355.
 -- Make temporary repairs to prevent further damage or looting. That might include boarding up windows, covering holes in a roof or shutting off the gas. Save all receipts and statements for such repairs and give copies to your claim adjuster.
 -- Be patient. The most serious cases are handled first. In the aftermath of a hurricane, insurance representatives will be swamped with claims, but Kemper will be in touch with all policyholders promptly.
 -- When re-entering your home, beware of loose or dangling power lines. Do not light any matches to aid sight; there may be leaky gas lines.
 -- If power has been off for more than a few hours, beware of perishable foods in your refrigerator that might have spoiled.
 -- Before drinking water, find out if it is safe.
 -- Be careful where you walk or drive. Poisonous snakes and insects may be present after flooding. Bridges and roads may be washed out.
 -- Flood victims who are insured under the Federal Flood Insurance Program should also contact their insurance agent.
 The Kemper National Insurance Companies are Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company, American Motorists Insurance Company, American Manufacturers Mutual Insurance Company and American Protection Insurance Company.
