KELSEY-HAYES WINS FIRST NORTH AMERICAN PASSENGER CAR ABS CONTRACT WORTH $60 MILLION ANNUALLY

ROMULUS, Mich., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Kelsey-Hayes Group has been awarded a contract valued at more than $60 million annually to supply its latest generation anti-lock braking systems (ABS) to a North American/Japanese joint venture company in the United States beginning with 1996 model year passenger cars. While Kelsey-Hayes is the largest producer of ABS for light trucks and sport utility vehicles, the award marks the first North American passenger car application for the company's new EBC 10(TM) family of ABS.
According to Ed Gulda, president of the company's Worldwide ABS and Controls Group, Kelsey-Hayes will ship approximately 300,000 units annually to the joint venture company's U.S. location. "Combined with our significant agreements with European automakers, valued at more than $110 million annually, this contract solidifies the growth of the EBC 10 family of products on an international basis," Gulda said.
This agreement also marks the second North American application for the EBC 10 family. According to the first contract, announced in September 1992, Kelsey-Hayes will supply EBC 10 products valued at $75 million annually to a North American manufacturer for a light truck application.
EBC 10 is an advanced system from Kelsey-Hayes that is smaller, lighter and more cost-effective than traditional ABS. It is compatible with virtually any passenger car or light truck, and works with any front, rear or all-wheel-drive vehicle.
The Worldwide ABS and Controls Group of Kelsey-Hayes is the world's leading producer of ABS, with locations in North America, Europe and Japan.
The Kelsey-Hayes Group is a major supplier of conventional brakes, anti-lock brake systems and electrical control devices to the automotive industry worldwide. Hayes Wheels International (NYSE: HAY), the world's largest manufacturer of steel and aluminum wheels, is an affiliate of the Kelsey-Hayes Group. Kelsey-Hayes is a business of Varity Corporation (NYSE: VAT).
