KELSEY-HAYES TO BUILD ABS MANUFACTURING PLANT IN THE NETHERLANDS

HEERLEN, Netherlands/ROMULUS, Mich., May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Kelsey- Hayes Group will build its European anti-lock brake systems (ABS) manufacturing facility in Heerlen, Netherlands, according to Ed Gulda, group president, Worldwide ABS and Controls. The announcement was made today at a groundbreaking ceremony at the Heerlen site, which is located in the Dutch province of Limburg at the border of Belgium and Germany.
"We're building the European manufacturing facility to meet the growing market demand for our new lightweight, cost-effective EBC 10(tm) family of ABS, which includes the EBC 10(tm), 15(tm) and 20(tm)," Gulda said. "To date, we've secured business valued at more than $110 million annually to produce these units for European automobile manufacturers. The new Holland manufacturing site will enable Kelsey-Hayes to provide these important customers with optimum product support, service and delivery."
According to Gulda, the Maastricht/Heerlen/Aschen region provides an excellent location for the company's European manufacturing base. "We will have our European base here in Heerlen, the center of Western Europe, along with its excellent infrastructure and a large reservoir of highly skilled, multi-lingual workers," Gulda said.
Gulda added that Yvonne van Rooy, Dutch Minister of Foreign Trade, was personally involved in persuading Kelsey-Hayes to locate in the Netherlands. Cooperation and assistance from the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency, the Limburg Development Co. (LIOF) and Heerlen city officials also contributed to the company's decision to locate its manufacturing facility in Heerlen. The investment by Kelsey-Hayes will make an important contribution to the Limburg automotive sector, creating approximately 160 new jobs in Heerlen. The investment signifies continued confidence in the economic climate of the Limburg region.
The plant will be completed in the first quarter of 1994, with ABS production slated to begin in May 1994. Production capacity will reach 1 million units annually by 1996. The facility will be dedicated to the production of the company's new EBC 10 family of ABS and traction control for the European automotive market.
