KELSEY-HAYES PURSUES EXCITING GLOBAL MARKETING STRATEGY FOR NEW ABS

KELSEY-HAYES PURSUES EXCITING GLOBAL MARKETING STRATEGY FOR NEW ABS
DETROIT, Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Kelsey-Hayes Group Worldwide ABS and Controls Business today announced it will manufacture and market its new EBC 10(TM) anti-lock braking system (ABS) on a global basis. The new product will be marketed throughout Europe, the Asia-Pacific region and North America.
Marketed under the trade name Electronic Brake Control, EBC 10 is the latest generation of the successful Kelsey-Hayes line of anti-lock brake systems, and will be available for passenger cars and light trucks beginning with the 1994 model year. EBC 10 is a four-wheel system that is 50 percent lighter, significantly smaller and more cost-effective than other systems currently available.
"EBC 10 is an innovative, high-performance, anti-lock braking system with worldwide applications," said Ed Gulda, president of the Worldwide ABS and Controls Business. "To market the product effectively on a global basis, we are expanding our engineering, marketing and manufacturing capabilities worldwide."
To support its global marketing efforts, Kelsey-Hayes introduced EBC 10 at the Tokyo Motor Show last October. The Tokyo introduction will be followed by its formal U.S. introduction at the 1992 SAE Congress & Exposition in Detroit in late February. A similar introduction will be held later this year in Europe.
 European Expansion Highlights
In Europe, the company recently opened a new sales and engineering office in Frankfurt, Germany. Located in the hub of automotive activity for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in Germany, France and Italy, the new Frankfurt office will serve as the Kelsey-Hayes European headquarters for ABS research, development, sales and marketing activities and also serve as the European office for Gulda. It will be staffed by engineers as well as sales and marketing personnel -- some of whom have transferred to Germany from an existing Worldwide ABS and Controls office in Italy.
In addition to the new office in Frankfurt, Kelsey-Hayes is also investigating further opportunities to expand into the European community through joint ventures and partnerships with established European automotive component suppliers. The well-known consulting firm of Booz, Allen, Hamilton has been retained in Europe to assist the company with its site selection process for what will be the company's ABS manufacturing facility on the continent.
 Asia-Pacific Expansion Highlights
In the Japanese market, Kelsey-Hayes announced plans to build upon the successful introduction of EBC 10 at the Tokyo Motor Show by expanding the sales and engineering capabilities of its existing office in Tokyo. It is also in the final stages of a yearlong discussion for a joint venture with a major Japanese manufacturer.
 U.S. Expansion Highlights
With the official U.S. introduction of EBC 10 at the 1992 SAE Congress & Exposition, Kelsey-Hayes will aggressively step up marketing of the new system to domestic manufacturers as well as the U.S. operations of Asian OEMs. Testing is currently under way on more than 20 vehicles with several OEMs to have EBC 10 installed on 1994 model- year vehicles and beyond.
To support this aggressive marketing program, Kelsey-Hayes is also expanding its manufacturing facilities in Fenton, Mich. This manufacturing expansion is planned to double Kelsey-Hayes production capacity for ABS units.
