KELSEY-HAYES NAMES GM'S FOZZATI TO HEAD EUROPEAN ABS OPERATIONS
ROMULUS, Mich., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Aldo Fozzati has been appointed vice president and general manager, European ABS (anti-lock brake systems) Operations, for the Kelsey-Hayes Worldwide ABS and Controls Group.
Fozzati had been executive purchasing director, General Motors Europe, reporting to J. Inaki Lopez, now GM vice president for worldwide purchasing, when Dr. Lopez was executive vice president of purchasing, GM Europe.
"As one of Dr. Lopez's top assistants, with extensive experience in and knowledge of the European automotive market, Aldo Fozzati is the perfect person to lead our accelerating penetration of the European market," said Ed Gulda, president of the Worldwide ABS and Controls Group.
Fozzati joined GM in 1984 as director of the Egyptian passenger car project. He then moved on to executive positions in the U.S. and at the Zurich European headquarters in Switzerland. In 1987, he became director of new business development for GM Europe, headquartered in Zurich, where he led the GM drive into Eastern Europe by establishing an engine plant in Hungary. He also helped other GM units in establishing Opel assembly operations in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and South America.
Before joining GM, Fozzati was a representative for Fiat in the U.S. and a project manager for the European Space Agency's Spacelab at the Italian aerospace company Aeritalia.
A native of Ivrea, Italy, Fozzati earned doctorate degrees in mechanical, aeronautical, civil and industrial engineering from the Polytechnic of Turin in 1975 and 1976. He has studied economics and business at universities in England and Belgium, and is fluent in several languages. Fozzati, his wife, Anne Maria, and their three children live in Bad Soden, Germany. He will be headquartered at Kelsey-Hayes' new sales and engineering office in Frankfurt.
Kelsey-Hayes' plans for increased growth in Europe were announced at Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris, France, Oct. 6, where it also introduced its new EBC 10(TM) family of anti-lock brake systems to the European market. Plans include start-up of an ABS manufacturing plant and continual investigation of possible joint ventures and partnerships with established automotive component suppliers.
Kelsey-Hayes entered Europe in the mid-1980s, when it purchased an interest in Europe's leading brake and wheel manufacturers, Brembo S.p.A. and FPS S.p.A., both based in Italy. In June 1992, the Kelsey- Hayes Wheels Group signed a letter of intent to establish a joint venture with the Czech company Nova Hut a.s. Ostrava to manufacture and market automotive wheel systems in Europe. In August, the Kelsey-Hayes Light Duty Brakes and Components Group took over the management of Pacoma, a German manufacturer of hydraulic products.
Also this year, the Worldwide ABS and Controls Group signed contracts totaling more than $110 million to supply EBC systems to two European automakers. And by the end of this year, the Light Duty Brakes and Components Group will have exported more than $4 million in disc brake calipers for Volkswagen's new Golf and Jetta models.
"With the establishment of operations, joint ventures and affiliations in Eastern and Western Europe, Kelsey-Hayes is uniquely qualified to provide anti-lock brake systems, conventional brake components and wheels to virtually every automaker on the continent," said John Utley, chairman of Kelsey-Hayes.
The Kelsey-Hayes Group of Companies is a major supplier of conventional brakes, anti-lock brake systems, electrical control devices, and steel and aluminum wheels to the automotive industry worldwide. Kelsey-Hayes is a business of Varity Corporation (NYSE: VAT).
