KELSEY-HAYES GROUP TO BUILD ABS MANUFACTURING FACILITY IN FOWLERVILLE, MICH.

FOWLERVILLE, Mich./DETROIT, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Kelsey-Hayes Group will build a $40 million manufacturing plant in Fowlerville to produce its latest generation four-wheel anti-lock brake systems (ABS), according to John Utley, chairman. Utley made the announcement today at a combined Automotive Press Association (APA)/Detroit Press Club/Windsor Press Club luncheon in Detroit. The official groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Thursday, Aug. 19, in Fowlerville.
"The building of the new plant represents more than growth and expansion for Kelsey-Hayes and our ABS product line," Utley said. "I am pleased and proud to say that Kelsey-Hayes is investing in the future of Michigan, its workers and the automotive industry. By building our newest ABS plant in Fowlerville, we are sharing our success with the people of Michigan, the birthplace of the modern automotive industry and of Kelsey-Hayes."
Construction of the 142,000-square-foot facility will be completed in spring 1994, and ABS production is slated to begin that summer. At full capacity, the new plant will produce approximately 2 million units annually of the company's new EBC 10(TM) family of lightweight, low-cost ABS. Initially, the new plant will employ approximately 75 workers. At production capacity, employment is expected to increase to about 140.
According to Utley, the Fowlerville plant will complement manufacturing efforts from existing ABS, sensor and control manufacturing facilities in Fenton, Brighton and Milford, Mich., and a new manufacturing plant under construction in Heerlen, the Netherlands. "Combined with our other ABS manufacturing sites in the U.S. and Europe, the Fowlerville plant will enable Kelsey-Hayes to meet the growing demand for our new four-wheel ABS technology worldwide," Utley said.
The EBC 10 family is a new generation of four-wheel ABS that is significantly lighter, smaller and more cost-effective than traditional ABS. It is compatible with virtually any front-, rear- or all-wheel- drive passenger car or light truck and can easily accommodate traction control. Since the EBC 10 family was introduced in 1991, Kelsey-Hayes has received contracts valued at more than $135 million in North America, and $245 million in Europe.
The Worldwide ABS and Controls Group of Kelsey-Hayes is the world's leading producer of ABS, with locations in North America, Europe and Japan.
The Kelsey-Hayes Group is a major supplier of conventional brakes, anti-lock brake systems and electrical control devices to the automotive industry worldwide. Hayes Wheels International (NYSE: HAY), the world's largest manufacturer of steel and aluminum wheels, is an affiliate of Kelsey-Hayes. Kelsey-Hayes is a business of Varity Corporation (NYSE: VAT).
