KELLY SERVICES REPORTS 1992 SALES AND EARNINGS

TROY, Mich., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Kelly Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: KELYA, KELYB), the nation's largest staffing support company, today announced sales and earnings for 1992.
Kelly Services President and Chief Executive Officer, Terence E. Adderley, announced that sales for the fiscal year ended January 3, 1993, reached 1.72 billion, a 20 percent increase over the 1991 sales level of $1.44 billion.
Net earnings of $39.2 million were 1.6 percent higher than the $38.6 million reported for 1991. Earnings per share in 1992 were $1.30 versus $1.28 per share in 1991.
Sales for the fourth quarter were $477 million, a 25 percent increase over the $382 million reported for the corresponding period in 1991. Net earnings of $13.1 million were 44 percent higher than the $9.1 million reported for the fourth quarter of 1991. Earnings per share for the quarter amounted to $.43 versus $.30 a year earlier.
"We are pleased that strong sales and earnings growth in the fourth quarter of 1992 enabled Kelly to surpass its 1991 performance," Adderley said. "Sales trends through 1992 and into the first weeks of 1993 affirmed that the recession has ended in the United States, and set the stage for a good 1993. Once again, the staffing services industry has proven to be a coincident indicator of economic activity. However, we anticipate some continuing pressure on margins and profits, because of the unevenness of the recovery across the United States and Canada, and the economic slump in Western Europe and Australia."
Comparative sales and earnings for the fourth quarters and years of 1992 and 1991 were:
