KELLWOOD REFUTES OKLAHOMA U.S. SENATE CANDIDATE STEVE LEWIS'S CLAIM
ST. LOUIS, Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Kellwood Company (NYSE: KWD) understands that Oklahoma U.S. Senate candidate, Steve Lewis, is claiming that Kellwood closed its Idabel, Oklahoma plant in 1986 because the U.S. government passed the Caribbean Basin Initiative Legislation. This is not true.
Kellwood Company closed the Idabel plant in 1986 due to a major customer's shift away from the private-label jeans manufactured at Idabel in favor of nationally-branded jeans, which were not produced by Kellwood. Since the plant was closed due to a severe drop in demand for the product, that production was lost and those jobs were not moved to any other location.
Kellwood has never received any money, low-interest loans or any monetary benefits from, nor has it been enticed by, the U.S. government or the U.S. Agency for International Development to move jobs overseas.
Kellwood Company, a Fortune 500 company with over $900 million in sales, is an international manufacturer and marketer of apparel, home fashions and recreational camping products.
