KELLOGG COMPANY INTRODUCES PSYLLIUM CEREAL IN CANADA
BATTLE CREEK, Mich., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Health and Welfare

Canada's Health Protection Branch has granted approval to Kellogg Canada Inc. for the use of psyllium as an ingredient in ready-to-eat cereal. Kellogg Canada Inc. is introducing "Kellogg's Bran Buds with Psyllium," marking the first use of the high-fiber grain in a Canadian food product.
"The introduction of 'Bran Buds with Psyllium' in Canada is a milestone in our efforts to continue to develop and bring to consumers new products with unique dietary properties," said Gary E. Costley, executive vice president, area director-Kellogg North America. "Psyllium contains eight times the soluble fiber of oat bran, and can make an important dietary contribution to the health of North Americans."
Recent studies support the role psyllium can play in a high-soluble fiber, low-fat diet. Dr. David J.A. Jenkins of the University of Toronto completed a study partially funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) on 28 hyperlipidemic volunteers. These subjects consumed "Kellogg's Bran Buds with Psyllium" as part of a low-fat diet and reduced their LDL cholesterol levels by over 8 percent in a two-week period.
In 1990, three major independent research teams from the University of Kentucky, George Washington University and the University of Massachusetts presented data that unanimously demonstrated psyllium's role in a health diet. The studies found that psyllium-based foods, in conjunction with a low-fat diet, help to lower blood cholesterol levels in patients with high blood cholesterol, more than a low-fat diet alone.
Following the 1991 national introduction of "Kellogg's Bran Buds with Psyllium" in the U.S., the introduction of this product in Canada now makes psyllium-based cereal available to consumers throughout North America. "Kellogg's(R) Fiberwise(TM)," which also contains psyllium, has been available in the U.S. since 1989.
