CM says BJP wants AAP govt to fail

LAUNCHING an onslaught against the Narendra Modi government, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday accused the Centre of trying to fail his government.

Kejriwal said he will keep a close eye on senior bureaucrat Shakuntala Gamlin, whose appointment as the acting chief secretary for 10 days by Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, saw an open war between the CM and the L- G. Defending his government's stand opposing Gamlin's appointment, Kejriwal alleged that the senior bureaucrat had tried to get the Delhi power minister's signature on papers giving guarantee to power companies for a loan of ` 11,000 crore.

Kejriwal said despite strong opposition from his government, the Centre appointed Gamlin as the chief secretary. "We opposed her appointment, but the BJP government made the same person the chief secretary of Delhi.

We are struggling for the last four days, but the Centre wants the Delhi government to fail,"he said.

Talking at a public meeting called Auto Samwaad in Burari area of Delhi, Kejriwal said that such a move by the Centre despite the Delhi government's protest has raised suspicions of some wrongdoing. He assured that his government would ensure that every file that comes from Gamlin's office over the next 10 days goes through him.

"I want to ask you if that official ( Gamlin) has ties with power companies, should she be made the chief secretary? She has been made the chief secretary only for 10 days. Despite our opposition, she was given the post and it raises doubts on whether they will get something wrong done by her in these 10 days. But I want to assure you that till I am here, I won't let her do anything wrong and will keep an eye on By Mail Today Bureau in New Delhi each file,"he said.

The confrontation between Kejriwal and Jung turned into a full- blown war on Saturday after the CM, in a letter, accused the L- G of trying to take over the administration while asking Jung to work within the confines of the Constitution.

Rebutting the allegations, Jung had said the Delhi chief minister was duly consulted on the issue of appointment of the acting chief secretary. "Till date not a single action taken by the Lt Governor's secretariat is in non- conformity with the provisions of the Constitution,"a release issued by Jung's office stated.

Kejriwal claimed that Gamlin wanted to trick the government into signing documents which would give ` 11,000 crore to power firms which she allegedly favoured. "She asked our power minister to sign some documents.

She said discoms are taking a loan of ` 11,000 crore and this is a comfort letter for that which is just a formality. But the minister found out that these documents were guarantee letter.

If Reliance- owned power companies failed to pay the loan, the burden would come on the people and the rates in Delhi would increase two- three times,"Kejriwal said.

On Sunday, the war of words between Jung and Kejriwal was joined by Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, who accused the AAP government of indulging in character assassination of a lady IAS officer from the North- East and disobeying the Constitution.

Rijiju said the officer's appointment was made by the L- G as per rules and the Delhi government was making allegations against her without any proof.

MoS reacts "This is nothing but character assassination of a lady IAS officer from the North- East. They are saying she is incapable. What are the charges against her? If she is involved in corruption, bring out the charges,"Rijiju said.

Amid the row, former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said an atmosphere of confrontation would be created if there is no coordination between the L- G and the CM. Sheila, who served as the Delhi CM for 15 years, also said it would be the city's loss if the administration does not function properly.
