KEITHLEY NAMED TO ENGINEERING "HALL OF FAME" IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
CLEVELAND, Feb. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Joseph F. Keithley, who founded the $100 million Keithley Instruments (AMEX: KEI) here in 1946, was named as a member of the National Academy of Engineering, one of only 17 people in Northeast Ohio to receive the honor since the award was instituted in 1964.
Keithley, named for his "pioneering contributions to electronic test and measurement instrumentation," was one of 79 engineers elected to the Washington, D.C.-based academy this year. The new members bring the total U.S. membership to just 1,628 engineers.
The National Academy of Engineering, founded in 1964, calls election to the Academy among the highest professional distinctions accorded an engineer. To qualify, an engineer must have "demonstrated unusual accomplishment in new and developing fields of technology or made important contributions to engineering theory and practice."
Keithley, 75, has a background in electronics that extends for more than 50 years. He began his career with Bell Telephone Laboratories in New York City, after earning his bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He began Keithley Instruments in 1946 as a manufacturer of extremely sensitive electrical measurement instruments. Major customers are scientists, researchers and engineers who need to measure very low levels of voltage, current or resistance. An example would be a materials scientist whose research requires a measurement of current down to 50 attoamps --.00000000000000005 amp -- or roughly the speed of watching 60 electrons passing by each second. Other products specialize in speed, capable of taking up to 1 million readings in a single second.
Keithley and his wife Nancy have endowed a chair in Technology Management at Case Western Reserve University in 1991, and in 1990 endowed a chair in electrical engineering at MIT.
Keithley has won a number of industry awards during his career, including the Navy's Distinguished Civilian Service award for research he conducted for the Navy during World War II, the John Fluke Sr. Memorial Award for his contributions to the industry, and International Executive of the Year from The Cleveland World Trade Association. Twelve of his company's products have received industry awards since 1962 as one of the 100 Most Significant Technical Products of the Year, from Research & Development magazine.
Keithley Instruments, Inc. is a leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of electronic test and measurement instrumentation and data acquisition and analysis hardware and software. Its products and systems are found throughout the world in universities, industrial research laboratories, engineering development departments, quality control areas and on production lines.
