KEEPING FIT with RACHAEL CHANCE.
As we approach the Easter weekend, a great calorie-killing, chocolate-burning exercise is the mountain climber.
Mountain climbers will work the heart and lungs as well as burning loads of calories.
The exercise will help to develop power in the legs and is therefore often used by athletes to help improve speed.
The mountain climber also gives a great core workout and key to performing the exercise effectively is engaging the muscles of the core (tummy, waist and muscles surrounding the hips) in order to prevent the torso from sagging.
Here's how to do the exercise successfully: 1. Begin by holding your body in a push up position, with your hands slightly wider than shoulder width apart and weight distributed between the arms and balls of the feet 2. Bend the right knee and bring it up in the direction of your right hand. At this point, you are simulating the position you would be in if you were climbing a mountain or a tree (hence the name) except you are horizontal position instead of vertical.
3. After bringing your right knee up, return to the original start position and repeat with your left leg.
4. Initially start with 30 seconds, take a 30 seconds rest and repeat 3 times.
5. As you get fitter see if you can continue for longer, 45 seconds, 60 seconds etc.
Before commencing this exercise ensure you have completed a thorough warm-up. You should consult you doctor before starting any programme of exercise.
Jump fitness classes are held in Marske, Marton, Redcar and Stockton. Visit the website for further information: www.
