KEEP VALENTINES DAY BALLOONS CLOSE TO THE HEART, SAYS EDISON

KEEP VALENTINES DAY BALLOONS CLOSE TO THE HEART, SAYS EDISON
ROSEMEAD, Calif, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Metallic balloons and streamers can be fun, pretty -- and dangerous. They are fun to send and pretty to look at, but if not kept indoors, helium-filled metallic balloons can cause lots of heartaches (and headaches) this Valentine's Day.
Metallic balloons released outdoors may drift into power lines, causing short circuits and costly, widespread power outages. "Many of our customers have been left without electricity for long periods of time because metallic balloons became entangled in our lines," an Edison spokesperson said.
Last year, metallic balloons caused 92 power outages, affecting more than 131,000 customers and costing more than $110,000 in repairs. Edison is concerned that these numbers will increase this Valentine's Day.
Even more dangerous is these seemingly harmless balloons can cause downed power lines. "Fortunately, there have been no serious injuries yet, but the public must be aware of the potential harm that can result from the improper handling of metallic balloons. They should never be released outside," the spokesperson said.
Edison advises people never to go near downed or dangling wires, or try to retrieve a balloon hung up in power lines. "If you see a wire down or a balloon entangled in the lines, do not go near it. Keep others away, too. Be sure to report the incident immediately to the fire and police departments, and call Edison at the phone number listed on your bill.
"A little extra caution and care can keep metallic balloons from darkening your Valentine's Day," the spokesperson said.
