KDDI's 'au' leads for 7th month in net growth in No. of subscribers.

TOKYO, May 12 Kyodo

KDDI Corp.'s ''au'' service led those of other mobile phone operators in net growth in the number of subscribers in April for the seventh straight month, scoring a net growth of 287,800, the Telecommunications Carriers Association said Wednesday.

KDDI's au service replaced the ''i-mode'' service provided by NTT DoCoMo Inc. as Japan's No. 1 mobile phone service in terms of net subscription increases for the first time in fiscal 2003 that ended March 31.

Vodafone K.K., which has been trying to catch up with NTT DoCoMo, posted the smallest monthly net subscription increase ever of 24,600 last month for it service. NTT DoCoMo marked a net subscription gain of 184,400, the association said.

According to the association, the total number of mobile phone subscriptions in Japan at the end of April totaled 82,009,300, up 0.6 percent from the end of March.
