KCS ENERGY PRESIDENT FORECASTS NEW NATURAL GAS MARKETS

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The use of natural gas will increase sharply in the United States during the rest of the decade as two new markets - automobiles and power generation - increase in response to stiffer environmental requirements, James W. Christmas, president of KCS Energy, Inc., told members of the Philadelphia Securities Association here today.
Christmas said the need for cleaner fuels is accelerating rapidly and predicted the Clinton Administration, installed today, would come down on the side of mandating greater use of clean fuels, such as natural gas, in automobiles and in electric power plants.
"We already have on the road fleets of cars and trucks powered by natural gas, and the major remaining obstacle to widespread use of natural gas power is the establishment of sufficient service stations to supply the fuel," said Christmas. He said most existing service stations could quickly add a natural gas supply.
"Power generation is going to feel the environmental pressures more strongly in the future," Christmas added. He forecast that many existing generating stations would be forced to convert to natural gas.
Christmas also told the securities group that KCS Energy, the best performing energy stock in 1992, expected to further increase its natural gas exploration and marketing activities in 1993, and that the outlook for the company "remains very positive."
KCS Energy (NASDAQ: KCSE) is engaged in oil and gas exploration and production, natural gas transportation, natural gas marketing and energy services with operations in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, New Jersey, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
