KAUFMANN NAMED GROUP VICE PRESIDENT, VENTURES, DOW EUROPE

 MIDLAND, Mich., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Fernand J. Kaufmann, vice president, Commercial and Sales in Dow Europe, has been named group vice president, Ventures, in the global core business organization. He will report to William S. Stavropoulos, soon to become president and chief operating officer of Dow (NYSE: DOW), and will relocate to corporate headquarters in Midland.
 According to Stavropoulos, "The primary mission of the global Ventures business is to speed the identification, development and commercialization of new opportunities that will add significant value to Dow's core businesses. Fernand has a significant management and technical background as well as broad international experience in sales and marketing that position him well to fulfill this assignment.
 "The future of Dow's core businesses is highly dependent on a strong ventures strategy and management of processes to analyze emerging global trends, markets, applications and technologies. New opportunity evaluation and selected discovery research are also essential."
 Kaufmann joined Dow Europe in 1969 in Horgen as an engineer in Resins Technical Service & Development. In 1974, he was named product marketing manager for Paper Latex, and in 1978, was named director of Marketing for Pharmaceuticals, Dow Europe. In 1983, he moved to Germany as regional general sales manager.
 In 1985, Kaufmann was named director of the Agricultural Chemicals Department of Dow Europe. In 1987, he became director of the Latex, Performance Products & Ventures Department, and in 1989 was named vice president of Performance Products. He assumed his most recent position in 1991.
 Kaufmann received his doctorate in polymer chemistry from the Ecole National Superieure de Chimie de Strasbourg, France.
