KATHLEEN B. YATES, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER OF THE SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, WILL STEP DOWN TO ASSUME PART-TIME ROLE

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Kathleen B. Yates, senior vice president and general manager of the San Jose Mercury News since 1988, will step down as general manager later this year and take on a new, part-time role at the paper.
"My family simply needs more of my time than I can give them and still be the kind of general manager I want to be," Yates said in a statement to colleagues today. As general manager, she has direct responsibility for the business operations of the paper.
She will continue as a senior vice president and will lead a major strategic planning effort at the Mercury News, according to Larry Jinks, president and publisher of the paper. She will also service as an adviser to the publisher and will assist with other major initiatives.
Yates, 38, is the wife of Peter Troop, director of corporate relations for Novell, and is the mother of Jay, who is six, and Tora, who will be three later this month.
"Kathy Yates is an outstanding newspaper executive with a bright future," Jinks said today. "She has been struggling for a long time with the conflicting demands of her job and her family. The good news for us is that she has worked out a compromise that will enable her to spend more time with her children and still have a major role at the Mercury News."
Yates will continue as general manager until approximately the end of November, when the paper's 1994 budget is prepared.
After graduating from the Stanford Business School in 1981, Yates joined the Mercury News as assistant to Tony Ridder, then the paper's publisher. In 1982, she added the title of chief financial officer.
In 1986, after Ridder became president of the newspaper division of Knight-Ridder, Yates moved to the corporate staff as his assistant. She came back to the Mercury News as general manager in September of 1988.
Ridder, now president of Knight-Ridder, said today:
"Kathy has done an outstanding job as general manager of the Mercury News. My hope is that she will be returning to that role at some point in the future.
"Meanwhile, I'm pleased that she will continue to be an important part of the Mercury News organization."
Yates serves on the boards of KTEH public television and Health Dimensions Inc. and is a member of the 1993 campaign cabinet for the United Way of Santa Clara County and of the Stanford-Amdahl Challenge Committee, which promotes community service.
She and her family live in San Jose.
