KAO NAMED LEADING DISKETTE BRAND IN CANADA; KAO DIDAK BECOMES KAO INFOSYSTEMS CANADA, INC. PLYMOUTH, Mass., July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- According to a recent report issued by the Santa Clara Consulting Group (SCCG), Kao is the leading brand of diskettes in the Canadian market for the second consecutive year. Kao, one of the world's largest diskette manufacturers, also announced today that it has changed the name of its Canadian subsidiary, Kao Didak, to Kao Infosystems Canada Inc. This move is aimed at further unifying its North American operations and meeting the rapidly growing data storage needs of computer users worldwide. Kao's North American operations now consist of Kao Infosystems Canada Inc., headquartered in Arnprior, Ontario, and Kao Infosystems Company, headquartered in Plymouth, Mass. In addition to serving the Canadian corporate, OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and retail markets, Kao Infosystems Canada is responsible for manufacturing Kao's data storage products for worldwide markets including Canada, Australia, South America, New Zealand, Mexico, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and the Caribbean. Yehiel Sobol, president of Kao Infosystems Canada Inc. and executive vice president of Kao Infosystems Company said, "Unifying our North American operations was a strategic business decision that has enabled Kao to successfully leverage the market strengths of both the U.S. and Canadian operations. Changing our name is a continuous step in the unification process that has allowed Kao to maximize manufacturing capabilities, secure more far-reaching partnerships with suppliers and provide a greater level of service to our worldwide customers. Servicing worldwide markets from our Canadian operations is an important element of our leadership strategy." "The Flexible Media Industry For Data Recording," the report recently issued by SCCG -- a leading consulting and analyst group that tracks the data recording media industry -- states that Kao is the leader in both the 3.5-inch and 5.25-inch diskette product segments, and has a 21 percent share of the total diskette market. David Bunzel, Managing Director of the Santa Clara Consulting Group, said "Kao's branded leadership position is not surprising; it is the only significant diskette vendor to establish a major manufacturing presence in Canada." The SCCG report also states that the market is clearly shifting to higher capacity 3.5-inch diskettes, which accounted for more than 60 percent of the branded diskettes sales in 1991. Kao recently completed a major North American expansion at its Plymouth, Mass., manufacturing facility, making it the single largest diskette plant in North America. The expanded facility enables the company to meet the industry's increasing demands for higher capacity diskettes. Kao has been the leading diskette supplier to hardware and software manufacturers in the world for two consecutive years. In addition to its strong brand presence in Canada, Kao is the fastest growing brand worldwide. In addition to the Arnprior and Plymouth facilities, the company also has facilities in Toronto, Canada; Barcelona, Spain; Fremont, California; Portland, Oregon; London; Singapore and Tochigi, Japan. Kao's products, including diskettes, data cartridges and digital audio tapes (DATs) incorporate advanced surface science technology. Kao Infosystems Canada Inc., and Kao Infosystems Company are wholly owned subsidiaries of Kao Corporation, a $5 billion Japanese conglomerate established in 1887. -0- 7/20/92 /CONTACT: Dorin Thibault of Kao Infosystems, 800-274-5520, or Katherine Leavenworth or Donna Ruane of Miller Communications, 617-536-0470, for Kao Infosystems/ CO: Kao Infosystems Canada Inc.; Kao Infosystems Company ST: Massachusetts, Ontario IN: CPR SU:
