KAO INTRODUCES THREE NEW DATA PRODUCTS, DUPLICATES SHOW GUIDE, DEMOS DISK DUPLICATION AT COMDEX '93

PLYMOUTH, Mass., May 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Kao, the world's largest 3.5-inch diskette manufacturer and North America's largest diskette duplicator, announced today that it will introduce at COMDEX/Spring and WINDOWS WORLD `93 three new data storage products. These include model KD8-112M, a high-capacity, 8mm data cartridge featuring 2.3 to 5 gigabytes of storage; Kao's 3.5-inch 128 MB rewritable magneto optical disk (M-O) for a wide range of drives operating from 1800 to 3600 rpm; and announced that it has begun shipping pre-production samples of its new polyamide-based, 120 meter DAT (digital audio tape) model KD4-120.
For the first time in COMDEX/Spring history, Kao is also providing show attendees with over 50,000 2HD 5.25-inch floppy disks of the COMDEX/Spring and WINDOWS WORLD `93 official program and exhibits guide duplicated by Kao and distributed with the printed show directory.
Kao will also bring its "factory-to-the-show-floor" at booth No. 1854 by demonstrating real-time, on-site software duplication of 3.5- inch HD diskettes of the official COMDEX and WINDOWS WORLD `93 program and exhibits guide. Attendees, if they wish, can exchange their 5.25- inch floppy disk version of the show guide for a 3.5-inch HD floppy disk version from Kao.
Commenting on Kao's show activities, John Depuy, Kao Infosystems director of marketing, said, "Kao will be very visible at COMDEX/Spring and WINDOWS WORLD `93 beginning right at the registration counters where attendees will receive a free Kao 2HD 5.25-inch floppy disk copy of the exhibits guide distributed with the printed directory. Kao will also be introducing three new data products including its new, high-capacity 8mm data cartridge; its new long-life, 3.5-inch 128 MB rewritable magneto optical (M-O) disk and its new polyamide-based, 120 meter DAT (digital audio tape) model KD4-120. We're also literally bringing our software duplicating process to the show floor where we'll be duplicating and distributing free copies of the COMDEX show guide on 3.5-inch HD diskettes."
 Kao's KD8-112M High-Capacity Data Cartridge.
Kao's model KD8-112M high capacity 8mm data cartridge delivers high data integrity with little volatility even after hundreds of passes. It is designed exclusively for use in helical scan back-up subsystems and it is data grade certified which assures information is safe from environmental contaminants. Utilizing Metal Particle (MP) technology, Kao produces a tape of greater magnetization (more signal) than current oxide or chromium dioxide tapes. With a capacity of 2.3 to 5 gigabytes (2.3 Gbytes of uncompressed data or 5 Gbytes with maximum data compression), the model KD8-112M gives the lowest cost-per-megabyte of storage. Using a proprietary process, it is coated at slower speeds for precise coating uniformity that ensures data integrity. Kao uses metallic splicing tape that ensures proper identification of "BOT" (beginning of tape) and "EOT" (end of tape). The model KD8-112M meets or exceeds all ANSI specifications.
 Kao's 3.50-inch 128 MB Rewritable Magneto Optical (M-O) Disk
Kao's new high quality 3.5-inch 128 Mbyte magneto optical (M-O) disk complies with ISO standards for high reliability, low BER (block error rate), high mechanical precision and high sensitivity. Its long life, large capacity and error-free performance make it ideal for either archival storage applications or for information storage that requires continual changes and updates of files. Comparable to a 3.5-inch floppy disk in size, it has a capacity of 128 Mbytes and is compatible with a wide range of drives operating from 1800 to 3600 rpm. A disk warp of less than 3 mrad is guaranteed even under the harshest operating environments. Durability is extremely high with a guaranteed even under the harshest operating environments. Durability is extremely high with a continuous overwrite of more than 10 to the 7th power times and a continuous readout of greater than 10 to the 9th power times.
 Kao's 120m Polyamide-Based DAT (digital audio tape)
Available later this year, Model KD4-120 supports all helical-scan formats with 4 to 16 gigabytes capacity (with maximum data compression). This adds increased convenience and significantly better cost-per- megabyte of storage over ordinary data cartridges and diskettes. Kao's 60 meter Model KD4-60 and 90 meter Model KD4-90 incorporate PET base and PEN base film, respectively. In order to produce a stronger, high- quality 120 meter tape, Kao's Model KD4-120 incorporates a new, polyamide (PA) base film that is thinner yet stronger than the PEN base film used for the KD4-90, Polyamide accommodates a thinner and longer length tape.
Kao Infosystems, headquartered in Plymouth, has become the largest 3.5-inch diskette manufacturer worldwide in only six years of operation. Kao Infosystems is a division of Kao Corporation of America, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kao Corporation, a $5 billion Japanese conglomerate established in 1887.
