PLYMOUTH, Mass., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Kao Infosystems Company, Plymouth, Mass., one of the world's leading diskette manufacturers and North America's largest diskette duplicator announced today the purchase of the assets of American Helix Technology Corporation, Lancaster, Pa. for an undisclosed amount of cash.
American Helix Technology Corporation is a leader in compact disc (CD) replication and packaging for the audio CD industry and an affiliate of High Industries, Inc., Lancaster, Pa. Kao Infosystems Company is a subsidiary of Kao Corporation of America, which is owned by Kao Corporation Japan.
CD-ROM (Compact Disc Read Only Memory) is a secondary optical storage device that uses compact disc technology. These discs work on computers and can hold over 650 megabytes of information or the equivalent of 300,000 pages of typed information. Industry sources estimate that the number of CD-ROM titles has nearly quadrupled since 1990. CD-ROM is one of the fastest growing segments of the computer industry with the number of installed drives expanding from 2.7 million in 1992, to over 6.8 million forecasted for 1995.
In making the announcement, Peter McGuirk, Kao Infosystems president and chief executive officer said, "With the acquisition of American Helix and the addition of their CD-ROM manufacturing capabilities to our operations, Kao adds new dimensions to our North American marketing efforts and greater solutions for our customers."
Commenting on the announcement, Allon H. Lefever, High Industries, Inc. vice president, affiliated companies and David D. Dering, president of American Helix called the acquisition a win-win situation for everyone involved. Dering stated, "This acquisition will provide American Helix with new opportunities in existing markets, while providing Kao with the immediate ability to service the growing demand for CD-ROMs."
With the acquisition, American Helix will become Kao Infosystems Company Optical Products Division with David Dering, former American Helix president, heading up the new division and reporting to Peter McGuirk, Kao Infosystems Company president and CEO.
Compact Discs and CD technology were first introduced in the early 80s and today's market is comprised of two major segments: CD-Audio and CD-ROM with a third segment CD-I (a range of interactive technologies) rapidly emerging. CDs are now the most popular recording medium in the music business and are rapidly expanding into both computer and interactive applications. According to computer industry sources, CDs will continue to be in greater demand throughout the 1990's as applications extend beyond audio and CD-ROM into CD-I, full-length, full-motion video, and multimedia entertainment.
CD-Audio is considered to be the world's premier music delivery system and offers both distortion-free sound and durability as discs are light, small and long-lasting.
American Helix Technology Corporation was founded in 1988 as a compact disc (CD) manufacturer specializing in both audio and CD-ROM (Read Only Memory) replication and packaging. Over the last four years, American Helix has gown to become one of the most respected CD replicators in the country.
