PLYMOUTH, Mass., Oct. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Kao Infosystems Company, one of the world's largest 3.5" diskette manufacturers, North America's leading software duplicator and a global provider of software manufacturing and distribution services announced today that it will introduce at CD-ROM Expo '94, Boston, MA, October 5-7, its new, faster 4X CD-R recordable discs used in new generation, high-speed compact disc recorders. New CD recorders spin about four times faster than original recorders and require comparable enhanced media. Kao Infosystems CD-R 63 and CD-R 74 discs meet all Orange Book standards -- are currently available -- and carry a suggested list price of $28.95 and $32.95 respectively.
John Stevens, Kao Optical Products Group business development manager said, "With the introduction of Kao's 4X CD-R recordable discs, we are one of the few manufacturers to provide enhanced media for the faster version recorders. Market trends are dictating the need for faster recorders and Kao has redesigned it's CD-R media to ensure that it is fully compatible with both the newer high speed recorders and the slower speed recorders now on the market. This should make the development of CD-ROMs even more cost effective for our customers."
CD-R's are used predominantly for software beta testing, multimedia, limited software distribution, CD-ROM development, in-house publishing, audio/video post production, network file servers and other archival applications. In 1993, the estimated size of the world CD-R disc market was 800,000 to 1,000,000 copies with approximately 70% sold in the U.S.
CD-Rs, offer software users and developers a viable alternative to recording and routing custom software and proprietary database information by providing a wider and more versatile distribution of custom software programs than alternative recording methods. CD-Rs allow users to record and play back increments of data before finalizing the CD-ROM. They conform to all existing industry standards.
CD-Rs differ in configuration from a traditional CD by the addition of a dye layer and a gold reflective layer. Both provide and assist in the functioning of the CD, but do not impede in its usage with existing software and hardware. Once recorded, CD-R is compatible with current compact disc players and will function in standard CD-ROM drives used for information retrieval.
Kao Optical Products Group offers the computer and audio markets a wide range of product services including CD-ROM and CD replication, pre- mastering, mastering, custom packaging, disc label printing, graphic design, cassette duplication, Pixturedisc(TM) printing, warehousing, fulfilment, CD-recordables, floppy disks, computer back up tape product and professional audio tape.
Kao manufactures and markets a wide range of data storage products and global software manufacturing and distribution services to original equipment manufacturers and branded product resellers. Kao Infosystems Company is a division of Kao Corporation of America, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kao Corporation, a $7.5 billion Japanese conglomerate established in 1887 that develops, manufactures and markets personal care, industrial and chemical products.
