KAO INFOSYSTEMS ANNOUNCES IRELAND PLANT EXPANSION; KAO EXPANDS IRELAND DISKETTE OPERATIONS TO MANUFACTURE AND MARKET CD-ROMS

PLYMOUTH, Mass., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Kao Infosystems Company, Plymouth, Mass., the world's largest 3.5" diskette manufacturer and North America's leading software duplicator announced today the expansion of Kao Infosystems Ireland Limited's software services plant in Clondalkin, Dublin, Ireland. On Wednesday, July 28, Kao received final approval from the Industrial Development Authority (IDA) of Ireland to undertake the expansion which will begin immediately.
Kao plans to manufacture and market compact discs and CD-ROMs (Compact Disc Read Only Memory) in the expanded facility and provide collateral packaging and distribution services for major hardware and software OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers). Current plans call for the facility being expanded by 20,000 square feet this year. Currently the plant at Cloverhill, Clondalkin, located outside of Dublin, supplies Kao diskettes, duplication, and distribution services to major software and hardware OEM's.
The expansion will include doubling Kao's current plant size to more than 40,000 square feet this year; installing specialized CD-ROM manufacturing and replication equipment; and increasing the number of Dublin-based employees. The Kao plant, located in Cloverhill Industrial Park, Clondalkin, was opened earlier this year to provide computer diskettes, duplication and packaging services to major software and hardware OEMs doing business in Europe.
In making the U.S. announcement, Peter McGuirk, Kao Infosystems president and CEO, "The expansion in Ireland will propel Kao into the European-based CD-ROM business, and it will also provide our large software and hardware OEM customers with both diskette and CD-ROM manufacturing, duplication, packaging and distribution support throughout Europe. This 'distributed manufacturing' shortens production time, cuts shipping costs and adds new dimensions to Kao's European marketing efforts and greater solutions for its worldwide customers."
Colin Poole, managing director, Kao Infosystems UK PLC said, "Kao's new CD-ROM manufacturing facility in Ireland, will reinforce our continuing commitment to supply our customers with a one-stop shop and total media support to meet their needs and requirements, in Ireland, Europe and also on a global basis."
CD-ROMs are computer optical storage devices that can hold over 650 megabytes of information or the equivalent of 300,000 pages of typed information.
In March, Kao Infosystems, purchased American Helix Technology Corporation, Lancaster, Pa., for an undisclosed amount of cash. American Helix Technology Corporation (now known as Kao Infosystems Optical Products Division), is a leader in compact disc (CD) replication and packaging for the audio CD industry and was affiliate of High Industries, Inc. Lancaster, Pa.
Kao has become one of the world's largest diskette manufacturers in only six years of operation and markets a wide range of data storage products including diskettes, data cartridges, magneto-optical (M-O) disks, and digital audio tapes (DATs) to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) including Apple, Microsoft, Novell and Lotus and to branded product resellers.
Kao Infosystems Company is a subsidiary of Kao Corporation of America, which is owned by Kao Corporation, a diversified Japanese company with sales exceeding $6.6 billion that has been in business since 1887.
