KANEKALON DOLL FIBER 'HAIR' IS THE DISTINCTIVE FEATURE OF THE TWO TOP-SELLING TOYS OF 1992

NEW YORK, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- In a hair-raising development, Trolls and Mattel's Totally Hair Barbie -- toys generously endowed with hair made from Kanekalon Doll Fiber(R) -- were the best selling toys of 1992, according to a survey of the buyers of 10,000 retail operations nationwide.
"This is the first time the two top toys shares the same distinctive feature," says Ed Oberhaus, senior vice president of Kaneka America, maker of the doll fiber. "The hair, and its playability, is enormously appealing to children."
Russ Berrie, Inc., the leading maker if the popular trolls reports sales of 80 million of the charming but homely little dolls. The perennial hit Barbie is expected to approach $1 billion in worldwide sales for 1992, with Totally Hair Barbie alone selling more than 10 million units worldwide, according to Mattel, Inc.
The two toys displaced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, best-sellers for the previous two years. The survey was conducted by Playthings Magazine.
Kaneka, headquartered in Osaka, Japan, is the world's largest maker of modacrylic fibers. The company's Kanekalon(R) fiber is used in some 80 percent of the world's wigs and hairpieces. Its Luxaire(R) fiber maintains a 90 percent share of the plush coats market.
