KAMPEN ADDRESSES FINANCIAL COMMUNITY

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Emerson Kampen, chairman, president and CEO of Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (NYSE: GLK), recently addressed approximately 70 representatives from the financial community. During his remarks, Kampen touched on the company's record-setting first quarter results, plus he detailed fifteen new areas of growth generated by internal product development.
On April 19, 1993, Great Lakes reported the highest quarterly results in the company's history, with earnings and revenues both up over twenty percent from the same period one year ago. Kampen pointed out that, "Earnings for the 1993 first quarter actually increased more than thirty percent, but the effects of weak foreign currencies relative to the dollar cost the company approximately $.08 per share in reported profits."
He went on to highlight fifteen new product/market opportunities that promise to spur the company's growth. "We continue to harvest the benefits of effective research and development programs directed at high-growth markets. These initiatives include: a patented, environmentally superior fire extinguishant; new polymer additives; water treatment technology that is carving out an ever-increasing niche in global markets; pharmaceutical intermediates for critical applications in the health care industry, and a growing family of value- added fuel additives."
Kampen concluded his remarks, saying, "The combined effect of these internal development activities offers the potential of adding new revenues in the hundreds of millions of dollars over the course of the next three to five years. By staying at the forefront of new technology, we intend to expand our leadership position in the markets we serve, thus enhancing the company's bottom line."
