KAMAN RECEIVES MAGIC LANTERN CONTRACTS FROM U.S. NAVY BLOOMFIELD, Conn., Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Kaman Aerospace Corp.
announced today that it has been awarded three contracts totaling $10.6 million by the U.S. Navy to design, develop and produce two advanced development models of Magic Lantern -- a new airborne, mine countermeasures sensor system. An early prototype version of Magic Lantern was deployed during Operation Desert Storm.
"This contract represents another major step forward toward fielding this new technology and capability for our nation's defense," according to Walter R. Kozlow, president of Kaman Aerospace. "Though details of the technology and operation are classified, the U.S. Navy has confirmed that Magic Lantern was successfully employed in the Gulf. And, lessons learned from Desert Storm indicate that mine warfare is a significant priority for our forces and those of our allies. Magic Lantern offers a significant new means to protect ships from mines." Under the new contracts, the Magic Lantern advanced development models will be delivered to the U.S. Navy in 1992. System design and development is underway at Kaman's Tucson, Ariz., facility. Engineering, integration and testing will be conducted in Bloomfield. Magic Lantern is an airborne sensor system which will rapidly detect, classify and localize mines. The advanced development models will be installed and tested on a U.S. Navy/Kaman SH-2F helicopter. Future models will be adaptable to other aircraft as required by the U.S. Navy. Kaman Aerospace, a subsidiary of Bloomfield-based Kaman Corp. (NASDAQ: KAMNA), is a prime and subcontract manufacturer of components and systems for various space, fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft, both military and commercial.
