KAISER ALUMINUM TO CUT SOME PRODUCTION AT MEAD AND TACOMA, WASHINGTON, SMELTERS

OAKLAND, Calif., Jan 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. announced today that, beginning today, it will temporarily shut down two aluminum-making potlines at its Mead, Wash. smelter, and one potline at its Tacoma, Wash., smelter. At Mead, the lines account for about 50,000 metric tons of that smelter's rated capacity of 200,000 metric tons per year. At Tacoma, the line accounts for about 18,000 metric tons of that plant's rated capacity of 73,000 metric tons per year.
About 80 of Mead's 1,179 employees and about 30 of Tacoma's 367 employees will be laid off temporarily as a result.
The production cutbacks are the direct result of receiving notification from the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), which provides all of the two smelters' electricity, that it would not be able to supply more than 75 percent of the facilities' power needs from Jan. 16 through Feb. 28. This period could be extended, if necessary, by the BPA.
"Decisions involving production curtailments which affect employees are always extremely difficult to make," said A. Stephens Hutchcraft Jr., Kaiser Aluminum chairman and chief executive officer. "It is a process given the highest priority and attention within our company because of the way it affects employees and the economics of the business.
"Our decision on restarting this curtailed capacity will be made at the time BPA restores power, based on conditions in the aluminum industry and the needs of Kaiser Aluminum," Hutchcraft said.
Tacoma has been operating at full capacity since 1964, and Mead since 1988.
Because the curtailment will be taken by the two smelters, Kaiser's third facility in the Northwest -- the Trentwood, Wash., rolling mill -- will not be affected. Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. is the operating subsidiary of Kaiser Aluminum Corp. (NYSE: KLU), which is 87.3 percent- owned by MAXXAM Inc. (AMEX: MXM).
