K-SWISS NAMED OFFICIAL FOOTWEAR OF THE U.S. OPEN '94

CHATSWORTH, Calif., Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- K-Swiss announced today that it has been named the Official and Exclusive Footwear of the 1994 U.S. Open Tennis Championships to be held Aug. 29 to Sept. 11 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
The designation was made by officials of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the national governing body for the sport of tennis and organizer of the U.S. Open, America's Grand Slam event and one of the most popular and prestigious tennis tournaments in the world.
Under an agreement with the USTA, K-Swiss will serve as the Official and Exclusive Footwear Sponsor of the 1994 U.S. Open Tennis Championships. As such, K-Swiss tennis footwear will be worn exclusively by all ball persons, lines people and court attendants.
"We are pleased to welcome K-Swiss, one of the world's finest manufacturer's of athletic footwear, to the world's greatest tennis tournament, the U.S. Open," said J. Howard "Bumpy" Frazer, president of the USTA. "With its rich tennis heritage, K-Swiss is an excellent choice to be the tournament's official footwear," he added.
While K-Swiss has been an exhibitor at the U.S. Open since 1987, this marks the first time that the company will be an Official Sponsor of the tournament and its footwear designated the Official Footwear of the event.
Steven Nichols, president of K-Swiss, said, "It is a great honor for us to have been named the tournament's official footwear. The U.S. Open is truly one of the premier sporting events in the world. The fact that it will be watched by millions of people here and abroad presents a wonderful opportunity for us to generate increased visibility for our brand on an international basis and to increase sales in such key markets as Japan, Asia, Europe, and South America," he added.
Nichols noted that K-Swiss has been manufacturing tennis footwear since 1966 when it introduced its Classic shoe, an all-leather tennis shoe that continues today to be one of the company's top selling models. "Since then, we've added more technically advanced tennis shoes for men and women, including our popular Si-18(R) model tennis shoe which was named `Shoe of the Year' by Footwear News, the industry's leading trade publication.
"K-Swiss currently has nearly two dozen different tennis models for men and women, including a revolutionary new model incorporating a toe piece made of Dupont(R) Kevlar(R) to protect against toe wear," Nichols noted. "For Spring, '95, we're introducing several other new models including an Si-18(R) Multi-Court Series(TM) for men and women who play on clay and grass courts," he added.
"We are solidly committed to tennis and believe there is a great future for the sport," Nichols said. As a testament to that, he noted K-Swiss' growing grass-roots tennis program that presently numbers over 1,000 junior players and over 1,000 tennis teaching pros. He also cited a recent survey of its readers by Tennis magazine that named K-Swiss the fastest growing tennis footwear company in America.
"K-Swiss is proud of its association with the USTA, the U.S. Open Tennis Championships and the sport of tennis," he added.
Founded in 1881 as the U.S. Nationals, the U.S. Open is being played for the 17th year at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. It features the world's top-ranked male and female players competing in Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Junior and Senior Events.
The U.S. Open is one of the four Grand Slam tennis events during the year. The others are: the French Open, Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
