K-III'S QUANDT TO ASSUME WIDER ROLE IN DIRECT RESPONSE

NEW YORK, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- William F. Reilly, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of K-III Communications Corp., today announced that Peter Quandt, Group Vice President, has been given the additional responsibility of managing K-III's Newfield Publications, the nation's leading direct marketer of children's book clubs and continuity programs.
Mr. Quandt, 45, currently is responsible for the company's Newbridge Group. Newbridge operates the largest collection of educational and professional and continuity programs in the United States, including 18 separate clubs for architects, computer professionals, teachers, nurses and scientists. Its other operations include: Weekly Reader, America's oldest and largest childrens newspaper, which is used in 80 percent of all elementary schools in the United States; Films for Humanities, the nation's leading distributor of videocassettes to high schools and colleges; and Krames, a leading provider of medical/patient information booklets to doctors. Newfield Publications' titles include: Weekly Reader Book Clubs, Just Ask, Young Students Learning Library and Illustrated Wildlife Treasury. Its adult continuity programs include McCall's Cooking School and Family Circle Weekend Crafts.
"This is a logical consolidation of some of our most important Direct Response properties under one senior manager," said Mr. Reilly. "Peter, who will now be responsible for businesses generating almost $400 million in sales, has clearly demonstrated that he has the ability to manage creative assets. These are solid businesses with strong positions in profitable niche markets. His mandate is to continue sales growth and increase margins while maintaining the high quality of the editorial product."
Mr. Quandt joined Macmillan Inc. in 1971 and held a series of positions with progressively increasing responsibilities. He was President of Macmillan Book Clubs when it was sold to K-III Communications in 1989, at which time it was renamed Newbridge. Mr. Quandt received his BA from Georgetown University.
K-III Communications is a diversified publishing, information and direct response company. Its properties include such well known publications as Seventeen and New York magazines, Weekly Reader, Daily Racing Form, and Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia.
