Just forget calling 999.
YOU have just seen a load of yobs vandalising a play area.
You decide to tell the cops. And under the terms of the new "Policing Pledge" here's what you do.
You text the word pledge, plus your postcode to 66101.
The cops then text you back with a telephone number of your local police (how do they know you are in your local area?) You then ring that number and leave a message about the crime (probably on an answerphone).
The local officer will call back within 24 hours.
If you think this initiative launched by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is as utterly barmy as I do, and that instead of improving trust in the police it can only create an even greater sense of distance and indifference, then here's what you do.
On day one of the Plod Pledge text 66101 with the two words 'Forget It'.
